Which WSA team is right for my athlete?
Age is only the starting point. Here’s how WSA considers skills, confidence, experience and the role an athlete can play in a team.
“Which team would suit my athlete?” is one of the first questions families ask us. The honest answer is that a good placement is about much more than choosing the nearest age band.
At WSA, we look at the whole athlete—and the whole team.
Age opens the conversation
Competition age rules help us identify which teams an athlete may be eligible for. You can use the team finder on our homepage to narrow down the possibilities, but it is a guide rather than a final placement.
Skills show us what comes next
Cheer brings together stunts, tumbling, jumps, dance and performance. Athletes do not need to arrive equally strong in every area. Coaches look at current technique, how safely skills can be performed and which environment offers the right level of challenge.
Confidence and teamwork matter
A routine only works when athletes trust one another. Listening, consistency, effort and the ability to contribute to a group matter just as much as one standout skill.
For a newer athlete, the best team is often the one where strong foundations can grow. For an experienced athlete, it may be the group that develops greater precision, responsibility and performance quality.
Placements can develop
Teams are carefully balanced, and availability can change during a season. Some athletes may cross over into a second group where it is right for both teams. Coaches continue to review progress rather than treating placement as the end of development.
The right team is the place where an athlete can contribute now and keep growing next.
Explore the current WSA teams, then send us an enquiry. Tell us the athlete’s age, experience and what they would love to achieve, and we’ll help with the next step.
